Soft Wash vs Pressure Washing: What's the Difference?
Both methods clean exterior surfaces, but they work in fundamentally different ways. Choosing the wrong one can damage your property. Here's how to know which is right for your home.
Two Methods, Two Purposes
Soft Washing
Uses low pressure (similar to a garden hose) combined with specialized biodegradable cleaning solutions. The chemicals do the work—not the force of the water.
PSI Range: 100–500
Pressure Washing
Uses high-pressure water (often 2,000–4,000 PSI) to blast away dirt, grime, oil stains, and buildup from hard surfaces. The force of the water does the cleaning.
PSI Range: 2,000–4,000
When to Use Each Method
Use Soft Washing For:
- Roof shingles
- Vinyl, wood, or painted siding
- Stucco and EIFS
- Wood fences and decks
- Screened enclosures
- Painted surfaces
Use Pressure Washing For:
- Concrete driveways
- Brick and paver walkways
- Sidewalks and curbs
- Garage floors
- Stone patios
- Pool decks (concrete)
Common Mistakes Homeowners Make
The biggest mistake we see is homeowners (or inexperienced contractors) using high-pressure washing on surfaces that require soft washing. Here's what can go wrong:
- Pressure washing a roof can strip granules from shingles, voiding your warranty
- High pressure on vinyl siding can force water behind the panels, causing mold
- Blasting painted wood destroys the finish and exposes raw material to the elements
- Using pressure washing alone doesn't kill algae or mold—it just moves it temporarily
Which Method Do Delaware Homes Need Most?
In Sussex and Kent Counties, most homes benefit from both methods. The house, roof, and any painted or wood surfaces should always be soft washed. Driveways, walkways, patios, and other hard surfaces get pressure washed.
The coastal climate here means algae and mold are constant challenges—and soft washing is the only method that kills those organisms at the source rather than just pushing them around.
